Hand-to-hand attacks can cause heavy damage.

Use arena hazards to your advantage!
The Basics
Since you're probably wondering how to play the game, we'll introduce you to some of the basics:

During a match, you view the action from behind your robot as it moves around the arena. The camera automatically tilts to give you a good view of enemies above, below, and in front of you. Important information is displayed on your heads-up display. You can move your robot in four directions, and use 6 "action buttons" to attack or evade opponents. To perform various special maneuvers, you combine directions and buttons. (For example, holding the "evade" button while moving lets you side-step left and right to dodge attacks).

Your robot is capable of attacking opponents in several different ways. The most basic method is through hand-to-hand combat: using punches, kicks, and throws to damage opposing 'bots. When your opponents are further away, you can use long-range abilities like energy cannons or missiles. Finally, in each arena you'll find objects to pick up and throw, as well as "hazards" such as lava pits, forcefields, and land mines. Remember, because Battlegrounds is fully 3D, you can attack anyone at any time - from any direction!
Special Abilities
As we mentioned before, each robot is equipped with cutting edge technology that's incorporated into its unique fighting style. Your robot can harness these special abilities to perform "super moves" - attacks that do extra damage or affect several opponents at once. Super moves are activated by certain sequences of directions and buttons. For example: pressing forward twice, then punch, will cause Pyros to spin and shoot out flame, hitting opponents in all directions.

Some super moves are extremely powerful, and draw on a special energy reserve to do additional damage to your opponents. If a weakened opponent is hit by one of these attacks, they may explode in a shower of sparks and debris! The energy reserve used by these "destruction" moves will build when you succesfully attack, block an attack, or use a "charge pad" found in certain arenas.
